I believe that the technique of reading the first and last paragraphs in an some-what effective way to get fast and easy information out of an essy or writing, because an effective writer will write their important arguments in those two paragraphs. It is important to know that Lightman is a scientist because his theory of the Earth and its shape would be different than his fellow scientists. An artist or social worker may or may not agree on the shape of Earth although the one that has more rescources to come to a decision like this one is indeed the scientist. In the examples his lighthearted tone was a sarcastic term that shows that he is jealous or has envy towards what others did and what he could not accomplish.

Facts that Gould provesd and can be used as evidence to support the theory of evolution are," Perfection covers the tracks of past history, and past history the evidence of descent is our mark of evolution. Lies exposed in the imperfections that record a hitory of descent fossils that are not common, and should not be. Evidence of this can be found in Paragraphs seventeen and eighteen. The sets up his1981 essay by explaining and or showing something that is really important for him and for the person that was in this part of history along with him.

1. Smiley belived that it is not what you are forced to do by your parents its more of what you want to do that makes you into a better worker. She describes this by showing that she loved doing all the hard work for taking care of the horses. That impact would be significant to the story , it would make the purpose of the writting.
2. Her evidence is house chores or her husband. Her husband would wish he wasnt doing thoughs chores and dream that he was finished or do something else. Smiley was loving her horse chores and gettin joy out of doing all the hard work. No she is not athouritative she is informing us of her opinion and how chores worked for her. Smiley's audience is the intetion of gettin the parents to stop puttin chores on the children and sooner or latger they will find to do it themselves.
3. She uses the rehitroical questions to get the audiences mind thinking about how chores that are forced do no good for the work job and showing not so good work ethic doesnt build a better person. Her questions got my minf thinking and showed me her point of view and i do agree with it

The essays that i perfered reading were Caring Makes Us Human and Follow the Laughter. I found them both interesting because they talked about love and care, and also joy and happieness. The type of story that Caring Makes Us Human uses to showcase what they believed in was a story about an inmate who found a cat and he felt that the cat represented joy and happyness in the cell and helped his inmates for once to do the kind and well doing.

The type of story that Follow the Laughter uses to showcase their belief is a story of laughter and happiness that brought everyone together. her ex-husband was mentioned in the story and how they use to be happy together and always smiling and when that feature of the marriage went away they ended up getting a divorce. Caring makes Us Human is serious, While the tone of Follow the Laughter is reflective. The essays are simular because they both look back and see differences from the past. The essays differ because they both have different tones. One essay is serious and the other is all the way reflective. the theme i probably would want to write about is happyness and laughter.

Page 13
The purpose that I think Powell had in mind while writing was racism is wrong. He tries to accomplish this by letting racism be motivation for him. Like when he talked about the time he was at a resturant and the waiter said, " Look I'm from New Jersey, I don't understand this but they will not let me serve you. Why don't you go behind the resturant, and I'll pass you a hamburger out the back window." He snapped because of this because he had never seen this before. I believe that the audience that he had in mindwhile writing was young children of all races. I believe that Powell is a very strong man, who sticks up for his thoughts and feelings. He does not do wrong, but he will not take wrong from others. i respect for what he believes in and instead of taking other peoples crap he stood up for himself.

Page 19
The purpose that I believe Goldberg had in mind while writing was talking about, or using a student who had really good writing topics in her class as an example. The audience that I think she had in mind while writing was other student that she was trying to motivate to have better writing habits. Her subject is the student with the best writing habits. Her attitude toward the student is very nice because she admirers her.

In reflecting on one of my past assignments I realized that the situation that made me want to respond in writing was situations i have gone throught with people i care about that made me mad, and that I had some stuff to say in writing that I could not say in person. writing was easier for me to express my thoughts and explain what was going through my mind at that time. The type of genre that I used was Contemporary Life and Problems because i know im not the only one with problems and i wanted to let them know that. And yes I do feel as if I accomplished this purpose. The type of context and culture that I used was "new age slang".

in the news is governemnt to blame?

i believe third world pverty has to grealy deal with the government. government deals with most of the important money and some are just not using the money wisely. a lot of diseases can be avoided with the right money usage. a lot of homless and starving people can be helped if the money was used right! the government is not all to blame for the reason why third world countries are what they are but i do believe thaty have a very big input on why they are!

i believe that the component that will help us more in project 4 are the 5 W’s and H (who, what, where, when, why, how). we are doing our paper on track and we have to find information about track athletes and how they accomplished their goal. we can also put why they decided track or when did they get a record etc. our track magazine deals with a lot of facts therefore this method is the best one to use when it comes to facts.

WALTER DIX- Following the Olympic dream

While becoming only the second man to win the 200 m NCAA outdoor title three times, Walter Dix went into a third place tie with six individual outdoor national championships and gathered up an outstanding eighteen All-American honors. He ran the seventh fastest recorded 200m on May, 26 2007 when he ran a 19.69 at the NCAA East Regional. Dix is the first one since 1969 to win the 100m, 200m and 4x100m at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. During his freshman year at Florida State in 2005, Dix had an amazing season that ended with him winning the NCAA Outdoor men’s 100m title, finishing fourth at the USA Outdoor Championships, and ending the campaign ranked #4 in the nation in that event by Track & Field News. At the 2005 NCAA East Region Championships, Dix broke the American junior record and the FSU all-time100m track record with a 10.06 clip to lead all qualifiers. His performance was the third-fastest junior time in the world, with the top mark being just being broken by Jeff Demps with a 10.01. Dix added the honor of Mondo Regional Athlete of the Year and ACC Outdoor Rookie of the Year to his list of awards. He is the first to sweep 100m & 200m ACC titles since Brendon Mahoney did it for Georgia Tech in 2000. He was the top high school sprinter in the nation for the 2004 season, running Olympic standard times in the 100m and 200m shattering the state mark with a 10.28 in the 100 meters at the Florida Class 4A state meet. He also broke the Florida high school record in the 200 meters. He was one of six SchoolSports Magazine's top high school athletes in the nation and was named a two-time Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel Track Athlete of the Year.

People were questioning why Dix hadn’t turned professional after an amazing junior year, or after a hamstring injury sustained during the spring. However when Dix decided to turn pro and go out for the Olympic team, he did not disappoint. He became the only American to qualify for Beijing in the 100m and 200m. Dix won the 200m race with a Hayword Field record time of 19.86 seconds, beating 2004 Olympic Champion Shawn Crawford by five hundredths of a second. Dix also finished second to Tyson Gay in the 100m, earning a spot on Team USA's 4x100m relay. On August 16 using his world-class closing speed, Dix passed the majority of the field in the final 40 meters of the finals of the 100m at the Summer Olympics to bring home the bronze medal with a personal-best time of 9.91. In the 200m he also won a bronze medal with a time of 19.98. Unfortunately the 4x100m relay team did not make the finals due to a bad exchange and the fall of the baton.
Dix only being 22 still has a lot of races ahead of him and another Olympics to look forward to so that he can add more medals to his collection. "We're just so unbelievable happy for Walt," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "He's the last of a breed of collegiate athletes that have done it the right way and this is his reward. He didn't get off to the greatest of starts, but as the whole world now knows, very few people can close a race like Walt." Now we can only imagine, what if he had had a better start? What if?

auto save

i believe transportation is very important now in days in everyday life. in a lot of places to be able to get from one place to another has to be dont by autos because there are a lot of cities that dont have a trail system or any kind of train system. people have to go to their jobs that mayb be 20-30 miles away from their homes, therefore if buying out GM and saving them will help every other company i believe it is very important to do so and get them functioning properly again. without autos, there might be a higher unemplyment rate because of lack of transportation. people need to make a living and they have to be able to get from place to place to be able to make that money and support themselves and their family. so in conclusion i believe saving transportation is a high priority in this country so that econmically everybody can at least attempt to make a living.

In The news saving jobs

there are several ways to help save jobs. when in need of money to save jobs, there always ways u can gain the money. for example, a business can do a fundraiser of some sort and wish for the best that they will get the sufficient amount of money that they would need.

the average worker can often have the best perspective on a company’s health and the overall business environment. Keep reading for the top layoff signal.
Think about it. If you’re in sales, you have day-to-day knowledge of the health of your company’s initiatives. If you’re in customer service then you would know - before anyone else - that your last product release was buggy as hell and people are switching to your competitor in droves. If you’re in HR, then you probably would get first word of hiring freezes. and if you know that you might be on the list of being let go start searching for another job that hopefully will pay the same amount you are being paid now

steroid in the news

steroids should not be allowed in any sport at any level. it wouldnt make sense busting your butt for hours working out trying to get better when u can just inject yourself once in a while and get the same or even better results. i am very strong on this particular topic because i am an athlete myself. when season comes along, i spend hours of training and sweat and pain everyday to get better at my sport and improve at every competition i compete at. people that uses steroids are just cheaters who are scared to feel pain and are too lazy to work hard so they just take the easy way out! and to my understaning anabolic steroids are illegal so even if you take them you are breaking the law!!!! if you want to be an athlete, have some guts and go out there and work hard.
not to mention how steroids are bad for your health and causes a lot of mood swings and different type of physical changes. i just wish people would stop using steroids and i wish i could stop hearing proffessional athletes being suspended because they got caught using it! that is the worst example to kids that want to be just like them!!!

from what i say in the passage on how Murray indentifies the certain information, audience, form, structure, developement, dimension, and voice for writers to examine when critically reading their drafts I would change my essay by including more information to try and get the readers to imagine in their head what they are reading. i believe now that if you can get someone to imagin and picture in their head what is being read, you did your job as a writer. there probably wont be any additional changes as I read the essay aloud to myself. the rest of the information influences me and the writing cuz it gives a strobger source of where the information is coming from

journal entry 7

1.
In this essay, Orwell suggests that the English language is on the decline because the people who use English are misusing the language. What sort of things does he mention as proof that the English language is in trouble?
he mentions that the english language is full of bad habits which spread by imitation and the example he uses is about how A man may take to drink because he feels himself to be a failure, and then fail all the more completely because he drinks. It is rather the same thing that is happening to the English language. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts.
2.
Orwell wrote this essay almost 60 years ago. Do you think the English language is in a better or worse condition than when Orwell wrote his essay? Can you think of modern examples of how people misuse language?
there is a lot of slang used now in days, and unfortunately that has become the every day language. furthermore, people are writing just as they speak and because of that they write ppor papers. another big difference is that stories and articles are now easier to read, unlike 50 years ago when they used advanced vocabulary and grammar.

3.
What do you think of Orwell’s list of rules to improve your writing?
it really just depends what and for who you are writing for. if writing to a business or for a college proffessor or something in office it is best to use big words if able to put, its better to use a scientific word or somehting like that to show your expanded vocabulary and knowledge. it really just depends.

4.
Orwell wrote the following in the provided excerpt:
Probably it is better to put off using words as long as possible and get one's meaning as clear as one can through pictures and sensations. Afterward one can choose -- not simply accept -- the phrases that will best cover the meaning, and then switch round and decide what impressions one's words are likely to make on another person.
What do you think he means when he suggests that one should focus on "pictures and sensations" before one sits down to put words on the page? Have you ever done this? Does it help you write better?
i believe he means to have a picture in ure head of what you are about to write. say your writing a story about what you would do if you were elected as an official. before you write it you want to imagine in your head actually doing and what you think will be peoples reactions to your decision.therefore that becomes easier to include imagery in your writing. i have done it before and it totally helped my writing

questions i answered from LisaWikner's project draft

What do you think of the topic? The topic is a good one to have a discussion but i see a lot of difficulty on writing a whole paper on this.
Do you think it's right that people who have got a lot money should get a lot more, while people who haven't got a lot of money don't get more? Some people that has a lot of money and only gets more is because they work very hard to earn it, and if they have a successful business thats only getting better and it's because of them, then i do think they deserve more money. MEanwhile, the poeple that dont get a lot of money are just going to have to find a way to get another job or something to be able to get more money.Usually its not easy to get money and it needs sacrifices and hard work to just get enough to eat. thats just life!
Do you believe that the rich get ritcher and the poor keep getting poorer?i cant answer this question because i dont know much about how the economy is affecting the rich and how it is affecting the poor....sorry

project 2 draft nba rule Bryan Astudillo

The sport of basketball has been one of the greatest sportw made in the United States. Over the past years, the sport has evolved into a world wide sport with every country now having a competative team. Here in the United States, we have the Nba ( National Basketball Association). The dream of a lot of kids is to o ne day be a star in the NBA while making millions. However, there are restrictions now to those that want to accomplish their dream and goals of becoming a NBA player early. Those restrictions deal with the NBA draft.
The NBA Draft is an event where a lot of kids sit and wait to hopefully hear their names be called to become part of a proffessional basketball team. The NBA Draft is an event that can turn a struggling team upsidedown. Athletes after a year of college can have their dream come true. BUT WAIT!!! A YEAR OF COLLEGE????? What if I'm ready to go right after high school? What if college is just not for me. What if basketball is all I'm good at? NBA responds; TOO BAD!
The NBA rule is, to be eligible for the NBA draft, you have to at least have a year of college under your belt. However, a lot of atheltes question the rule because they feel it is a waste of time and money to go to college knowing that they are not going to complete the full four years. The question in a lot of people's minds is, is it like this in every sport?
Major League Baseball (MLB) drafts a lot of theri players from highschool while still playing their senior year. They can decide to go with the team and join the teams minor league system, or they can decide to go to college and p lay for the team there.
Soccer has no age limit when it comes to signing players. There has been a lot of occasions where a club team will sign a ten year old onto their team. Just four years ago, a MLS soccer team signed a fourteen year old named Freddy Adu with a contract that was worth more than 100 million dollars. Over the seas in Europe, they are known to give that amount of money to kids that havent reached double digits in age.
Whay has the NBA always had the rule and not give the opportunity for a younger player to turn pro? Well, It hasnt always been this way. A few years ago, players were allowed to enter the NBA draft and some of them actually have become the face of the NBA.
Things still needed to discuss:
Briefly talk about the careers of Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Garnett.
Possibly mention the NBA's reason why the rule was made.
Talk more about how college is not for everyone and if a rule like that was made it should be for staying all four years, not just one.
Questions:
WHat else can i add to my list of :things still needed to discuss?
Is there anything i can fix with what i already have written?
Is it more important to talk about the success of people that started playing out of high school or talk about the belieif of athletes that say going to college is a waste of time and not for them?

racial question blog

I believe that it could not have been a racial act. Now in days when news breakout that a white cop killed a black suspect, they immidiately start assumming and charging the case as a racial one. My theory about those cases are is that someone can not become racist over night, they have to be racist for a long time. Therefore people that has worked with him or hangs around with him should have the idea and knowledge that he is a racist. There has been no accusations of that from them yet. So if the people that see him at a regular bases hasnt come up saying hes a racist, how can an ordianry stranger just come out and say, oh wait he shot a black person, hes a racist! i just think people that their first thought about these cases are that its was racism should go get a life!

Interview one or more people about this myth. For example, I could easily go out and ask people about whether they believe everyone should go to college and why they believe as they do. Post transcripts (the interviews word for word) or a summary of your findings to your blog.

Question: Do you believe woman should be just housewives? Why or Why not?

Iran Hollis- i believe women should decide if they want to stay home or not. They can become very bored at home, and going out and working will distract them and they can have money forthemselves to buy clothes and jewlery for themselves.

Jimmy Mooney- I believe women has the choice of what they want to do because we live in america. there is a reason why we are a free country and women have the right to b a full time worker if they choose to be.

Freddy Alcantara- I think that woman should stay home and take care of the household. Usually the men earn enough money to pay the bills and pay for food etc., so I would want to have nice hot dinner when i get home from work and when we have children I would like the mother to be home taking care of them 24/7 not just any nanny or babysitter. i guess there is an exception when the guy can not come close to earning the money they need, so if its a neccesity that wife have to work than be it, but if not the wife whould stay at home.

1. I believe the wall that is being divided is the wall being built for his daughter, but it represents a final thought on what the father taught him and what he meant to Saunders. I dont believe it is a clear message but it is what i believe the message is. I believe he writes that in the end to show and explain what his dad would have said in the certain moment to represent that the dad was in his mind and thoughts, but in the end just picked up the tools and continued building that wall.

2. The Chronological order in the essay is from the after time that the dad died, to when the grandfather had just gotten married, to when Scott saw his dad work with the tools and started practicing himself to back to after the dad dying to when he first heard that the father died. It explains events that occur during the time he is talking about for example the grandfather's wedding, or the gerbil getting lost behind a wall.

3.I believe dawn stones are stones used in early history to build or repair things. What this represents is the hammer has been along for so long in their family but it hasnt changed its purpose, it wouldve the done the same exact things as if the dawn stone was what was passed down to the generation.

ine the news- splenda

There are always going to be various articles about the thought of what Splenda is going to do to you. however there will usually be one constant argument of what Splenda really will do to you. should we trust what we read? there really is no way for us to test what Splenda really does to you(unless you have your own little science lab in your house), therefore we have to trust the opinion of the scientists and experts that came out with the explanation of what Splenda really does. and the only way we really are going to find out if its true is when we take the Splenda we see the results after in our own body. The one thing i do have to say though is not everything reacts the same with everyone. The scientists might be right on what Splenda really does, but everybody is different and one person might not get the affect that Splenda is suppose to give however that does not mean that the scientists were not telling the truth. It just means that the person didn't react like it was suppose to.
I probably use Splenda about 3-4 tomes a day with the drinks I consume during the day. When I drink coffee that number will usually double to about 6-7 Splenda in a day, it really just depends if I drink coffee or not.

journal entry 5

Read Judy Syfers’ essay, "Why I Want a Wife" (available on WebCT under "Course Documents") before answering the following questions:
This essay was written in 1971. What types of duties does Syfers describe as being performed by wives? To what degree do you believe these are still done primarily by women? Have these or other things about the husband/wife relationship changed in the last 37 years? The duties descibed in this essay is the wife being responsible in about everything including children care, husband care, food, cleaning, planning of socail affairs, and all this while also working and paying for a lot of things. i beleive the the the wife no in days still do most of the cooking, cleaning, and childcare, but a lot of responsibilities that wifes had to respond for before, husbands are stepping up and taking care of that. In the last 37 years the hisband/wife relationship have completely changed. Most families now share the responsibilities equally. You will even see the guy stay home and do all the housework and childcare, and the wife going to work everyday.
How would you describe Syfers’ writing style? Does she do things you would typically avoid in your own writing? Syfers' writing style is very simple. He is just repeating i want a wife..... there is no difficulty and it probably is the writing style that elementary kids can probably understand easily. I would avoid most of his writing style. Usually i avoid the "I" in my papaers, he uses it in every sentence. i would make my paper in a more difficult language.
Syfers was reacting to a social structure that she felt at the time was unfair. What types of injustice or unfairness do you see in the world nowadays that you think should be addressed? Syfers implies that men benefit from the servile position of women in the family. Who benefits from the injustices you see active in the world today? I think the biggest injustice is the dicrimination for the gays and lesbians. i believe we are all people and we all have feelings. What is so wrong two people falling in love with each other and wanting to spend theri lives together forever? I believe no one benefits from injustice because when discrimination is showed riots are formed and damages are usually made which causes money. So for example if the government decide that gays will not be allowed to be seen in public, there is a great possibility that there will be a huge riot with the people throwin things at government buildings, breaking things in the street, etc. and all that will cause the government money.

cancer blog response

There is up to a certain age when parents should be making the important decisions in their children's life. I believe that age is under 18 years old. If there is speculation that the child might have cancer, i believe it is the parents right to have their child checked. Cancer is a very deadly thing, and when not treated right it can immediately just get worst. There will be teenagers out there that if the decision was up to them, they would just be too scared to do it, or sometimes even pride would make them not go get tested. That's when a bad decision is made and in the future when their condition gets worst theyre going to regret not doing the examination. After 18 years of age, they are an "adult" now so they make their decion but hopefully with some advice from parents. But parents should be able to test their children because with early detection it will be cured easily instead of waiting and it spreading out and not having any cure in the future.

questions for active reading page 108

1. creativity comes crom creative types- most managers single out the people they believe have creativity and those they believe dont. in reality anyone with normal inteligence have creativity in them and can be useful in giving ideas and options.
money is a creativity motivator- money becomes something that everyone wants, therefore they become more interested in what they do so that in the end they are acknowledged as the best and recieve a reward. Money makes people work harder and all that creates successful results.
time pressure fuels creativity- when time pressure is involved, creativity is shown less. the only way there can be good creativity in a short period of time is to make sure that the worker is isolated from all distractions and just concentrating on his task.
fear forces breakthroughs- the idea that sad, angry, depressed people are more creative is false. usually people that are happy one day comes to work the next day with posistive and creative thoughts and ideas.
competition beats collaboration- competition kills creativity. it is better to work as a team and share ideas.
a streamed organization is a creative organization- when a downsizing is occuring, people seem to worry more about the uncertainty of their future and that causes creativity to plumit dramatically.
2. Teresa's design was to give projects to 238 people from seven companies and writing journals describing everyday's work and work enviorment. The study was designed to look at creativity in the wild. It was basically meant to see how people react to creative projects with different situations, distractions, and enviorments. I really do not see anything suprising about the way she carried her research. What she couldve probably done is tested less people and maybe be physically present at the jobs and observe personally the envoirment and the reaction because an email describing the enviorment may not be the most accurate source.
3. I believe the audience to this article are job companies. Every example used in the article was in a job setting and it showed ways how people can improve in creativity in the workplace, no where else.

COMP 1000 – Journal Entry #4
Read the Bartholomae excerpt (available on WebCT under "Course Documents") before answering the following questions:
What does Bartholomae mean when he says that students must "invent the university" when they write in college? When bartholomae means when he says "invent the university" is to make sure to write the essay with characteristics that the school is probably known for. He mentions that the writer has to learn to speak the university's language and speak as they do. I believe that another good way to "invent the university" is to include experiences and inspirations that the university might be well known for. For example, if your dream has always been to be a musician, and the university is known for their music program, why not add something about the hope of you becoming a musician one day.
What does Bartholomae suggest is a way for students to become "insiders" within academic discourse? Students need to learn is to extend themselves into the commonplaces, set phrases, rituals, gestures, habits of mind, tricks of persuasion, obligatory conclusions, and necessary connections that determine the "what might be said" and constitute knowledge within the various branches of our academic community.
Summarize some of the differences between the two examples of student writing that Bartholomae examines, and Bartholomae’s opinion of these examples. When it comes to the football sock essay, the language that is probably expected in the university isn't reached, while in the music essay the language spoken in it sounds more proffessional and probably what the university expects out of their students. Bartholmae's opinion about creativity shows that the musician is a better example of creativity then the football player and due to the prompt that the university gave, the more evidence of creativity that is shown the better the student "invents the university".

cloning blog response

There are people out there that believe that unborn children are nothing. There is belief that hey, they aren't born so if we get rid of them we really are not killing anything. I first have to say that is completely wrong and unhumane. Just because children arent born that does not mean that there is no life in it. An embryo is as much a baby as one born!!!!
now the opinions about cloning. I believe that cloning should be only used for medical purposes. As in medical purposes i mean, cloning a heart so that when someone needs a heart transplant there is one ready for them. Cloning should not be used for anything else but to safe a life!
Therefore, to sum up the question asked, i believe stem cells from embryos should be allowed to be cloned for medical purposes. Taking stem cells from an actual embryo is an act of murder in my opinion because you are taking life away from the world. I am really strong about not taking the life away from someone that can't fight back. With cloning stem cells, we might be abkle to save thousands of lives with that one baby still growing in its mom and getting ready to come out and face the real world!!!

in the news #2 mexican border

To build this fence on the Mexican border, i would give the 400 million dollars to make it. I prefer knowing that we give them a certain amount of money to spend on the fence, then to just say use the money that's left and we not know how much they will spend. If we just tell them to use whats left, they can take advantage of that and go past the 400 million. With us giving them a certain amount, we tell them this is what you have and if you go over it that's just too bad! So like that we wont go into a deeper economic hole.
Another thing though, i do not believe half a fence costs 400 million. If possible we will give them less money and just tell the government to work with that.
This fence is said to be built for preventing terrorist attacks, but i believe that it's just another way to have all the immagrants out of the country because Bush is known to want to happen.
Blocking the mexican border is not a high priority right now in this country, we have to worry about more important things like education and medicine.
